Teen Technology Week 2016
Teen Tech Week 2016
Theme- Create It @ Your library
March 7th – 11th
Teen Tech Week is a week where we celebrate technology in all its forms. We encourage people to participate in activities that incorporate computers, MP3’s, eReaders gaming, etc. Please help me celebrate Teen Tech Week by participating in the use of computers or other technologies. Let me know if you need any help or ideas. I would love to know about any lessons you will be doing to incorporate technology that week.
Lunchtime Activities
The students that wish to participate will need to sign up on the Escobedo Library by leaving a comment on this post with your name, grade and which lunch you have. Space is limited to 16 students per lunch. You will be able to eat lunch in the library each day. A lottery system will be used to select participants. The winners’ names will be posted on the library doors Friday, March 4th. Wednesday, March 2nd will be the last day for students to sign up.
We will focus on creating things during the course of the week. Lunch will be closed to students that have not signed up and do not have their names on the daily list posted on the library doors. For those you of that are not familiar with the creating in Libraries, you can go to this article to learn more: http://www.slj.com/2015/05/programs/craft-work-the-maker-issue/#_ *This Teen Technology Celebration Week focus on creating will be the start of what I hope to be a future permanent Library Maker Mobile (we will call it our Imagination Station) where students will be encouraged to learn through creativity & experimentation.
*Monday- Make a geometric sculpture in a group of four students from 72 pencils (4 groups total). Follow multistep directions as a group to create and awesome looking sculpture that we will display in the library.
*Tuesday- No-Sew 10 minute tee shirt tote. Bring an old tee shirt that we will upcycle into a tote bag. If you don’t bring in a shirt, you will not be able to make a tote. Any color or size will work. No sewing/experience required.
*Wednesday- Lego, K’Nex, Domino, Block Creation Station. Free time to explore the new library building sets. Who can create the most interesting structure?
*Thursday- Makey Makey introduction and exploration. What is a Makey Makey? MaKey MaKey is an invention kit for the 21st century. Turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. It’s a simple Invention Kit for Beginners and Experts doing art, engineering, and everything in-between. Later this year we will go into more detail about additional things we can do with our Makey Makey.
*Friday- BYOC. Bring Your Own Craft. Bring something you have been working on or want to learn- ex. duct tape, beads, etc. Mrs. Baca will play music while we craft and share our creations. If time permits, you can share your craft and how it is done with the group. If you would like, you can bring enough materials to share your craft with others.
Stop by the library to explore our new Imagination Station. It is a Makerspace where students can gather to create invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. The Imagination Station is currently a work in progress. If you have any items that you would like to donate see Mrs. Baca. Items we need include: games, puzzles, art/craft materials, Legos, K’Nex, blocks, dominoes, recyclable craft items, sewing & woodwork material, glue guns/glue sticks, etc.
