The Devils Arithmetic

By: Jane Yolen

In The Devil’s Arithmetic Hannah is on her way to celebrate Passover with her family, because they are Jewish. She didn’t want to go with her family because she didn’t really like her religion and heritages traditions. When she gets there,  they play a traditional game, by opening the door she travels through time, where she ends up in a small village located in Poland around the time Nazi’s were there. She gets put in a concentration camp and she finally realizes what her family went through.

What’s New

February 19th, 2009

Just wanted to share a few new additions to this blog- to the right you will notice another column. I’ve added a new Page called Book Trailers. Go to the links  to watch commercials about different books. Hopefully, you will find something new to read. I’ve also added a Twitter called Kidderlit. The first lines of young adult books are posted (different ones each day), if you see something that sounds interesting you can click it. Then a link will take you to amazon.com so you can find out the title of the book and gather more information. Many of the titles are ones the Esco library owns, so before you decide to purchase it, come see if we have it at school. So what do you think about the new additions?

CCSD Bristlecone Storytelling Festival

February 12th, 2009

The Clark County School District storytelling festival is an exciting, voluntary program offered to fourth through twelfth grade students. The students practice skills that support the district English/ Language Arts/Reading curriculum through the use of storytelling. Students present thier stories to thier peers who in turn vote on the two best storytellers to represent our school at the region festival. The Esco Storytelling Showcase will take place on April 1st from 2:15-3:15pm in the Escobedo Library. Voting will take place at that time. The Northwest region festival will be celebrated on May 11th and 13th, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Students who are interested in this activity need to see Mrs. Baca for more details.

Guidelines for the festival:

The heart of The Bristlecone Storytelling Festival is the schoolwide celebration of storytelling. The region festival is a continuation of this celebration and being chosen by one’s peers is an honorary accomplishment.

Participating grade levels: Fourth through twelfth grades -Participant format: Solo or Buddy

Maximum time for performance: Five (5) minutes

School contacts/ facilitator: Mrs. Baca

Categories for storytelling: Fairytales, Folktales, Legands, Tall Tales, Fables, and Myths.

All stories must be retold from published material.
Student tells story to school facilitator before schoolwide festival.
The use of props, music, costumes and puppets is not allowed. The focus is on the story, not the storyteller. Storytelling is an oral tradition, not drama. At the Region Festivals, students will tell their stories at a stationary microphone.
Stories should be told free of negative stereotypical characterization; therefore, it is recommended that accents and dialects not be used unless it is an integral part of the story.
Listeners choose who goes to the schoolwide festival.

Who Am I?

1. I can grow to be about 400 pounds. I have flippers instead of legs to help me swim. I am on the endangered species list for people want by skin and shell. Who am I?

2. I’m a small fish with a pouch that I use to protect my eggs and babies after they hatch. Who am I?

3. I have a little baby animal inside of me. The mother animal hangs me on a piece of sea weed and leaves me to develop by myself. What am I?

4. All that’s left of me is my skeleton. If I have the right kind of skeleton, people can use me to wash things. Who am I?

5. People drill a hole ib me and blow on me like a horn. I’m made by a big snail. Who am I?

6. Most people put me in the bird cage for the bird sharpens his beak on me. I am really the inside shell of an octopus- like animal. Who am I?

7. I build a tube around myself that I live in. It protects me from being eaten by other animals. Who am I?

8. The animals in my group sometimes look like pin cushions although we have a hard shell (called a test) and sometimes have spines that stick out all over. We belong to the sea star group. Who am I?

9. I puff myself up with air to protect myself. It makes my spines stand up and animals can’t bite me. Who am I?

10. I am a tiny animal related to the jellyfish and I can sting just like they can. I like to have many neighbors and we all build houses that attach to each other to form a hard, rock-like mass. Who am I?

eBooks

January 21st, 2009

The Esco library is proud to announce the addition of 65 eBooks to their collection. eBook stands for electronic book. Here is how they work: Log into Destiny, do a keyword search: eBook (this can only be done at school). When you find a title that you like, you need to click on it and then select the option Check-Out. This will download the title into Adobe Digital Edition. Then you can read it at that computer. The copy will remain there for three weeks and then it disappears.  Pretty cool stuff! This technology is new to the district so there may be kinks along the way. If you encounter a problem, please come see Mrs. Baca for assistance. Happy eReading!!!

*At the right hand column of this blog you will find the list of eBooks available at Escobedo (under the Pages section). Please note, only one eBook can be downloaded and checked out at a time.

*See Mrs. Baca if you do not know your Destiny login information.
