1. Read a book.

2. Go online to Mrs. Baca’s library blog (found on the Escobedo website- The Escobedo Library- Mrs. Baca). Fill out the Reading Rocks Book Summaries form(blog entry below- scroll down this page)- Click fIll out my form, then the form will pop up. Fill it out completely and submit.

3. Bring your Reading Rocks card back to the library to redeem your prize. 1st book earns a FREE 8oz. serving of frozen yougart at Golden Spoon, 2nd book a FREE pass for 30 minutes of game play at Gameworks, and the 3rd book a FREE kids meal at Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

4. If you complete your card, you have a chance to win the Grand Prize Pack for your grade. Not really sure what that is but I’m bet it is good. (Last year, own very own Emily A. won an iPod and a backpack full of other prizes.)

5. Completed cards will be entered into a drawing for admission to the Escobedo Rock Band Party. That’s right, the library will be rockin’ and rolling at our exclusive Wii Rock Band party from during 1st and 2nd lunch on November 20th. During that time we will play the hit game Rock Band and discover the next Escobedo idol. The library will be closed for lunch that day and only those 20 lucky winners will able to join in on the fun. Good luck!

Now why wouldn’t you want to participate? Come on down to the library and get rockin’…

Read Beyond Reality @ your library® during Teen Read WeekTM 2009

Area teens will be reading for the fun of it as Escobedo MS celebrates Teen Read Week(TM), October 18 – 24, 2009. They join thousands of other libraries, schools and bookstores across the country who are encouraging teens to celebrate this year’s theme, “Read Beyond Reality @ your library®.” Teen Read Week(TM) is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association. This year’s theme encourages teens to read a wide variety of materials that are out of this world, just for the fun of it.

Parents of teens are encouraged to celebrate Teen Read Week(TM) at home. I offer these ideas:

Visit the public or school library with your teen to attend a program or to check out books.

Set aside time each night for the family to read.

Give books or magazine subscriptions to your teen as a gift or reward.

Share your favorite book with your teen.

Surf the web with your teen to learn about new books or authors. A good place to start is YALSA’s Booklist’s page.

Join a book discussion group at the school or public library.

Teen Read Week(TM) is held annually during the third week of October. An updated sponsors and supporting organizations list can be found at the Web site, http://www.ala/teenread.

Just wanted to share a few new additions to this blog- to the right you will notice another column. I’ve added a new Page called Book Trailers. Go to the links to watch commercials about different books. Hopefully, you will find something new to read. I’ve also added a Twitter called Kidderlit. The first lines of young adult books are posted (different ones each day), if you see something that sounds interesting you can click it. Then a link will take you to amazon.com so you can find out the title of the book and gather more information. Many of the titles are ones the Esco library owns, so before you decide to purchase it, come see if we have it at school. So what do you think about the new additions?
